A retaining wall is a structural element, not just a landscape feature — its whole job is to hold back earth and water, permanently. Built right, it disappears into the property and never gives you a second thought. Built wrong, it bulges, leans, and eventually fails. So we build them to hold.
That means the parts you don't see: proper footing, base, backfill, and — most importantly — drainage behind the wall so water pressure never gets the chance to push it out. In Indiana's clay soil, drainage behind a wall isn't optional; it's the whole ballgame.
